Grammar rules for the present simple tense with the verb "to be":
o The main verb in the sentence is the past tense of the verb "to be" (did)
o When the verb "to be" (did) is used as the main verb, then no auxiliary verb is used.
o Negative statements - "not" is added to make the sentence negative
o Questions - the verb "to be" comes before the subject
Past Simple Verb Tense with the Verb "to be" Chart

+ I was - short as a child.
We were - in alex last week.
She was - the top student in her class.
- I was not tall as a child.
You were not funny last night.
He was not happy about failing the test.
? Was I - a lot of fun as a child?
